Let's talk about names...

A few days ago, some of my friends and I were discussing naming our kids.  I love talking about names and researching fun and unique names so I thought, why not talk about it here?  I may have even posted about this once before a few years back but o well you get to read it again!

I was a little bit obsessed when it came to naming my kids.  I did lots of exploring names from our family tree, scoured tons of baby chat boards, and really researched meanings, popularity, famous connections, and combinations of some of my favorites.  I wanted something that was unique but not odd and something that was not too trendy or cutesy.  I wanted the name to have some type of meaning and connection to their heritage and be a name that could grow with them through all stages of life.

Hadley was super easy for us to name.  We were set on her name well before we even knew she was a girl.  Jarrod has always dreamed of going to a place called Hadley Creek.  It is a beautiful area in Illinois with tons of wildlife.  Jarrod has said for a long time that he wanted to name his little girl Hadley.  I thought it was such a sweet southern sounding name and I didn't know any Hadley's at the time so it was just perfect for our little girl.  Elizabeth is my middle name.  I always loved my middle name so much when I was little.  I loved that it was long and had a "z" and there were famous people with it.  But what I loved the most about it was that it came from my aunt.  I am a huge fan of family names and I couldn't wait to pass it on to my daughter as well.  So Hadley was easy peasy when it came to the naming game!

Hunter Claire was a whole other story.  It was so much tougher the second time around.  I knew I wanted an "H" name but I didn't want anything that favored Hadley.  When I first found out that I was pregnant, I was dead set on Harlow but Jarrod was not having it at all.  He wanted Harper Jo but that was way too popular for me so we were stuck just kind of hoping it would be a boy since we had agreed on several boy names we both loved.  When we found out she was a girl, we were back to square one on the name.  John Ross and Hunter had always been our boy names we had agreed on.  Hunter is my grandmother's maiden name and my mom had thought about using it for me if I had been a boy. I have always loved boy names for girls so we decided to just use it for a girl.  I have always loved the name Claire.  I read a few books with a character named Claire and just fell in love with it.  I think it both looks and sounds so pretty and is just a timeless classic name.  We also have a few on our family tree and I know a few Claire's that I think are just such great young women.  I am also a huge fan of double names and was always so jealous of my sister's. Claire just went so perfectly with Hunter so we put them together and got Hunter Claire.

I think our kid's names fit their personalities so perfectly.  They are so different from each other in so many ways and I could not think of anything more fitting for them both.

One of my most favorite things about starting back to school, is hearing all the names of the kids in their classes. I love to see what the trendy names are for their age and predict about how those kids will be the Brittanys, Joshs and Jessicas of my class.  But what I really love the most is seeing the unique names and wonder where they came from.  There are so many names in this world and maybe I am a weirdo but I just really love exploring them all.  I would love to hear where your names came from!
