What I Read- The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins..... oh my I don't even know where to begin!  Let's just say I pretty much put my whole life on hold for a few hours to read this book because I couldn't put it down once I started!  It really was that good!  If I had to compare to anything that I have read lately, I would have to say Gone Girl would be the closest.  It is a missing girl/murder mystery full of not-quite-what-they-seem lives.

The story is told from the perspective of three girls... Rachel, the girl on the train, who is an alcoholic who can't seem to get past her divorce from her cheating ex-husband.  Anna, the new wife to Rachel's ex-husband and neighbor to Megan, the missing girl that Rachel often notices as she rides by on the train each day.  But when Megan goes missing, the connections between the three become even more perplexing.  They mystery will draw you in and lead you on an investigation that you can't put away until you figure it out for yourself.

A must read for sure - a very well written thriller!  But I must warn you though, you may want to set aside a couple of days of your life to read it because once you start, it is hard to stop!!

Blood Type Diets

I recently read an article about a book titled Eat Right for Your Type that was discussing blood type diets that I found very interesting.  Blood type diets are not necessarily for losing weight but just for overall health for your body.  The idea is that people with different blood types handle different foods differently.  By eating certain foods and eliminating others, your body will function better with less illness and negative effects and just overall better health.

I am type O so this diet recommends that I eliminate dairy and wheat and eat lots of meat and vegetables.  Type A's should have a mostly vegetarian diet and type B have a robust digestive system and ideally can have a balanced diet of wheat, meat, fruits, and vegetables.  Type AB has the fewest digestive problems and should just eat small portions.

Anyways... there are tons of websites out there that talk about this blood type dieting that are pretty interesting.  I am not sure I believe it all 100% but it does seem very interesting and I enjoy researching and studying about it all.  I haven't completely tried the recommended diet for me but in the past, eliminating wheat and dairy have always done the best for me so it definitely makes sense.  My dad is type A and has been a vegetarian for a few years so it makes sense there as well.  You can find lots of more information about it here.  I look forward to trying it as I learn more about it.

Kenny Chesney on a Thursday

My husband decided on Wednesday to buy tickets to go see Kenny Chesney on Thursday in Nashville! I was like you're crazy until he informed me that tickets were super cheap and it was Kenny's birthday! So we arranged sitters and revived our youthful carefree selves and headed up to Nashville on a week night!

And I must say that I am glad we did! We had a really good time!

We stopped by Margaritaville for dinner and literally had the best seats in the place.. Right by the upstairs window so we could people watch the lovelies on Broadway! And I had the best taco salad ever!!

We had a little time to kill so we explored the fun places on Music Row and made some new friends who I determined were pretty much Jarrod and I just twenty years older.

We had great seats at the concert to! I was so excited! But I had also been up since 430 and donated blood that morning so I knew it would be a long night! So I went on a search for some coffee... I felt like an old lady asking the lady at the bar if they had any coffee anywhere and was thrilled when she said they did and it was only $2!

Jarrod used to really love Kenny Chesney in high school but he was really displaying his man crush on Jake Owen a little who was one of the openers for the concert! And Jake did not disappoint! He was a great opener!!!

Kenny Chesney finally took the stage and played several of his old and new songs including Big Star in which he brought a special guest to join him... TAYLOR SWIFT!! Pretty sure I turned into a squeeling clapping 10 year old girl for a few minutes! I think I was most excited about the cool mom points I would get when I told Hadley I'd really seen the real Taylor Swift.... For real!!

Lucky for us, Kenny brought several other special guests out including Uncle Kracker and ended the show with Joe Walsh from the Eagles! Great concert!! But my phone stinks and it died so I didn't get many more pictures!

We hurried home after the show to get a few hours of sleep before heading to work! Needless to say, a few extra cups of coffee were required Friday morning!! But it was all worth it! We had a great last minute Thursday night special date night!!

Yard Work

One of my most favorite things about spring is finally being able to get out and work in the yard!  I love love love a house with a well kept lawn and nice landscaping.  I just believe that a well groomed flower bed can make a house look sooooo much nicer.  That is seriously one of the things that really influenced our decision when buying our house several years ago.  We lucked up and bought our house from a professional landscaper!

Since we finally got a few beautiful days and some time off from work, we finally got to get out and do a few things around the house.  Today is garbage day and the road is literally lined with garbage bags from all the mess we cleaned up from our yard... weeds, limbs, hedges, grass clippings.  I know it is crazy, but my most favorite yard work is pulling weeds.  I just love it.  I can't stand to see a nice flower bed full of ugly little weeds and I can't help myself once I get started to not stop until I get every single one of those little boogers and their roots plucked out.  So please don't be offended if you see me pulling up your weeds when I come to your house... it's like a little OCD piece of me that I can't help.

I am hoping after this last little cold front that is planning to come through this weekend, we can plant a few more flowers and things to spruce it all up a little.  And hopefully everything will really start to green and bloom soon!  Have I mentioned that I really love spring?

What I Read - In Cold Blood

As I've mentioned before, I am really trying to read all of the classic American novels. So I asked my cousin who is an avid reader what her favorite classics are and she told me to read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote... So I did! And oh it was soooo good!! Pretty sure everyone that I've talked to in the last week or so has heard me say something about it!

It is a true crime novel about a small farm town family who were viciously murdered by two ex-convicts. The book takes you through the murders, investigation, trial, and execution of the murderers. It is a page turner, to say the least, as you solve the mystery of the terrible murders as well as discover the sad evil lives of the cruel murderers!

There is also a movie about the author as he wrote the book called Capote that I can not wait to watch! And another bonus, Truman Capote was great friends with Harper Lee! Seriously a must read!!

Spring has Sprung... Well almost!

Saturday was such a nice day! We got to play outside and finally get some of our outside chores done!

While Jarrod and I cleaned out the garage, the girls treated themselves to a little picnic prepared by Hadley consisting of gummies, chips, and juice boxes!

HC got a new tball set for her birthday so we had to try it out... Yes Hadley has on her tutu! But I have to admit, I was actually pretty surprised at well she could whack the ball!

HC was more interested in the fishing pole! I'm so thankful that my girly girls can enjoy these kinds of things with their daddy!

And we even got the yard mowed a little!

Gigi took Hadley to see Cinderella while HC took a nap so we could finish up a few things in the yard. I was so glad to get some of my bushes trimmed up and flower beds cleaned up a little. I am so looking forward to this last little bit of cold to go on so I can plant a garden and some fresh new flowers! I loooove spring!!

We're going to paint to celebrate!!

We celebrated Hunter Claire's 2nd birthday last week at a fun paint party with all of her little friends!

I ordered these cute invitations from Zazzle.  It is by far my favorite place for invitations and cards!

Thanks to Pinterest, I found some fun paint party ideas for the party!

And thanks to Mrs. Sam, we had a cute and delicious cake!

I set up a paint station for all the little ones to paint!  I hate I didn't take a picture of everyone with their finished paintings because we definitely had some masterpieces!

Birthday Girl thought she was too important to paint at the table and decided she must only use the easel to paint her lovely art work!

She really just wanted to eat though!

And of course she received yet another gift that sings Let It Go!  Just what we needed!

They all had a great time painting and playing....

....but the bubbles were by far the greatest of all!

Thanks to everyone who helped this fun girl celebrate her big day!
Turning two was pretty fun!

The Perfect Blue Jean

I have been on a major hunt for the perfect blue jean lately. I really love my Jessica Simpson Kiss Me Super Skinny jeans but I needed a more casual just every day blue jean.

So I went on a quest for the perfect pair... The perfect color, non skinny leg, comfortable jean that fit just right! When I went in the store I told myself I wasn't even going to look at the price tag until I found the ones that were the best! So I went through several stores grabbing every pair that I thought fit the bill.. I ended up with about 15-20 pair in several different brands in a couple of sizes. I had everything from Old Navy and Levi's to Ralph Lauren and even picked up a pair of Seven for all Mankind!

After several changes, I finally found the most perfect jean ever! The Ninewest Vintage America Boho Bootleg! And they are seriously perfect! The fit is perfect. The style is perfect. The color is perfect. And they are literally the most comfortable jean I have ever tried on! Just don't me if you see me wearing these every day!

What's in my gym bag?

Now that spring is trying to arrive with warmer weather and longer days, I am finding a little more time to run when I get home in the evenings.  However, most of the time, my runs take place on my lunch break whether it be inside on the treadmill or on the lovely roads around my workplace.  So... that requires me packing every thing I need not only for my run, but also to freshen up afterwards... All packed nearly in my nice little gym bag.

I use the Ziptop Organizing Utility Tote from Thirtyone.  It is large enough to carry all of my things it has tons of pockets on the outside to store all of my small items.

For my actual exercise...
 - I love my New Balance 870V3 running shoes.  I went to an actual running store and got fitted for the shoe that best fit my foot.  Who knew there was so much more to running shoes than pretty colors and a cute little swoosh sign?  Not only was I wearing the wrong size, I was also wearing the completely wrong kind of support for my high arches.  I would definitely recommend going to somewhere like this if you are wanting to get into running.  I promise it is worth the investment!
- I also would recommend investing in a good pair of socks.. I can't believe I paid $15 for a pair of socks but these Thorlos are my favorite.
- I won a armband at a 5k I ran last year and I am so thankful for it.  I can pop in my iphone and headphones so I can easily listen to my music and follow my running app.  Makes my run much more enjoyable.
- I always throw in a few hair ties.  These elastic ones are my favorite because they don't tend to leave as much of a crease.
- My go-to running attire is almost always capri "yoga pants" and a loose lightweight tee.  If you want to cut a few bucks, I would recommend doing that here.  It may just be me, but I really can't tell a big difference in the off brand pants and tshirts than the high dollar Nike and Under Amour brands.

To freshen up....
- I always throw in a couple of my own small cheap gym towels.  I read somewhere that gym towels are one of the germiest items even after they are washed so I definitely don't want to be sharing those with a bunch of other sweaty folks.  Plus I like a fresh towel after showering.  I mean who wants a stinky sweat filled towel on their nice clean skin?  Definitely a must if you plan to freshen up after your workout!
- A cheap pair of rubber flip flops for the shower and walking around the locker room.
- Refreshing wipes - I like the Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths from ban.  These are great for a quick freshen up.
- A small travel size bottle of moisturizing body wash.
- Cetaphil Face Wipes to wipe off my makeup.  I almost always do a whole fresh face of makeup after a workout.  I have very very sensitive skin and my face tends to get pretty sweaty so it is pretty important for me to get all the gunk off as quick as possible!  Plus I get the added bonus of having a fresh face of makeup in the afternoons!
- Deodorant.
- Some good smelling body spray and scented lotion.
- A hairbrush.
- Dry Shampoo to give a little life back to my hair.

And I also usually throw in some bobby pins and my makeup bag to help put myself back together to!

Party Party Party

I was so excited to celebrate Hunter Claire's 2nd birthday with family and friends at her Paint Party today!  We had a blast but we are worn out at the Harrison house!  HC had such a fun time playing with her friends, eating, and painting.  Needless to say, she came home and crashed!

I love having birthday parties for my kids' special days.  Every year, I say that I am going to cut back and not do much but I always change my mind!  I just think that every kid deserves a special party that is all about them filled the sugar and friends no matter how big or small.  I vividly remember almost every one of my birthday parties and just how special they made me feel.  I hope my girls grow up with fun memories of their fun parties to!

We are so very thankful for all of our sweet friends and family who love my girls so much and make them special every day... but especially on their birthdays!  I can not thank you all enough for loving my girls as much as I do!

PS - I hope to get my pictures off my camera soon to share all the paint party fun with you all!  But this sweet picture of the birthday girl will have to suffice for now!

Homemade Poptart Fail

My girls really love poptarts! They would eat a whole box every day if I let them and I am not exaggerating! I found some recipes for some "homemade healthy poptarts" so figured I would try it! I mean they looked so healty and delicious... What could go wrong, right?

It was a total flop!! I made the biggest mess and somehow only ended up with only 9 instead of 12 funky shaped pastry things that were a total mess! I made a huge mess making them and they looked like Hadley had made them herself! They tasted okay... Kinda like toast with jam. Not worth the time or effort. And to make it all worse.... They were way more calories than a regular poptart anyways!

 Serious Pinterest poptart FAIL!!!

Links & Loves

One of my favorite things in the blog world are what some call their links and loves posts.  So I decided to jump in on it to... now debuting my first ever links and loves!

I really really love this blush

I am currently trying to read through the Bible Chronologically.  I know there are Bibles that are laid out chronologically but I am using this plan and just reading from Jarrod's Bible.  He has a really good study Bible that offers lots of extra information and insights.

I just ordered several used books on my Classic Novels reading list from Thrifty Books Used Bookstore.  I paid about $3 for each of them.  I love my Nook and borrowing books from the library but I am trying to actually collect all the books on my greatest novels list.  And they came in within just a few days!

I think I need these shoes.  However, most shoes like this don't fit me well because they assume if you have an extremely long foot like mine, that you also have a really fat foot.  Well I don't.  I have an extremely long and skinny foot so most bootie type shoes just seem to swallow my foot.  But I really do love them!

Oh yeah and have I mentioned how much I love Sun San sandals for my girls?  I got a really really good deal on Amazon the other day got 5 pair for less than $100!  They are seriously the best little girl spring and summer shoe!

I found a new website that I really love!  She has tons of great clean eating recipes, Costco shopping lists with prices, and grocery shopping on a budget resources, plus lots of other great info and ideas!

I have also just recently discovered Lauren Conrad's website.  She has a little bit of everything on her site including hair, beauty, fashion, and food!  I could probably easily get lost there for a while! And she just chopped her hair off in the cutest style... makes me want to go short again!  It is always so tempting to do in the spring and summer!

So there you have it... My latest links & loves!

Happy Birthday Hunter Claire!

My sweet Hunter Claire-

How in the world are you two years old so soon?  Where has the time gone?  You have gone from my sweet little laid back spewing baby to a polite rambunctious fun-loving little toddler in what seems like over night!  Slow down my sweet baby girl!

This year you had a lot of fun.  You played on the beach, had fun in the snow, and visited Disney World!  You got a new cat that you like to wag around and discovered the Kiddie Carnival and Chuck E Cheese.

You are the most polite little girl.  You always say please when you want something and excuse me when you bump into anyone or anything.

You love to play with little toys.  You often stack them in lines on the furniture and move them from chair to table to shelf.

You run ALL THE TIME!  I don't think your little brain understands the words slow down!

You are very smart!  You know all of the animals and love to sing your ABC's... even though a few letters may not be exactly right!

You looooove music so much.  You love to sing and dance.  Wheels on the Bus, Old McDonald, and Do Lord are your favorites.  You know all the little dances to every sing along song and you often put in special requests for whichever one is on your mind.

You have the all time best performance for Let It Go!

Your best friend is Brynlee.  You call her BB and she calls you the same.  You follow each other around all the time and love to play together every single day.

You love your sister so much.  You often look for her and try to do everything she does.  You pretty much will do anything she tells you to do.  And you really love to sneak in her room and play with her doll house.

You are an excellent eater.  You love salsa that you call ketchup, pizza, poptarts, mac and cheese, and anything served in a little squeeze patch (even the spinach and broccoli I sneak in from time to time).  You can down about 4 of them in a matter of minutes.  You love your "jink jink" and really love it when Babu sneaks in some chocolate.

You love your grandparents to the moon.  You've always called Babu, Gaga for some reason and you always recognize as soon as we pull up to Papa and Meme's house.

You jump around a lot.  You can just be standing still and then all of a sudden start bouncing going "boing boing boing!"  Hence the reason  you are getting a trampoline for your birthday!

You don't like to sleep in your own bed very much.  Your daddy puts you to bed every night and you love to snuggle close to someone.  Most nights you find a way to sneak into the big bed with all your blankies and stuffed animals that you sleep with every night.  You are so precious when you get sleepy and grab your paci and rub your blankie to your lips.

You love Peppa Pig, Elmo and Minnie Mouse and have your own precious way of saying their names with accents on all the wrong parts!  You also love the Finger Family and you sing it often.

You sulk and pout when you get in trouble or get mad.  You stick out your lip and drop your head and just stand there for a few minutes.  You throw a huge fit if you ever have to go to timeout but if sister is in timeout, you love to go sit with her and giggle.

You are so much fun and so happy.  You have the best laugh and your little giggles are the sweetest ever.  You bring so much joy to our family and I have no idea what life would be like without our little Tasmanian Devil as Mr. Lloyd calls you!  You are such a blessing to everyone and we all love you very very much! Oh sweet child of mine!

and I will give you rest...

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30

I am currently trying to read through the New Testament chronologically and Matthew 11 was what came up Monday morning as I sat sleepily drinking my second cup of coffee!  Isn't it amazing how God chooses to speak to us sometimes... especially through the Bible?

We have had such a busy few weeks and this one is no different.  On top of being gone and everyone all out of sorts last weekend, having something on the calendar every night this week,  a big two year old birthday party coming up, AND Daylight savings time, I am just exhausted and a little overwhelmed!  But I know I am not alone!  I have so many dear friends and loved ones going through some tough stuff right now.  And honestly, I know that stressing over my busy to-do list consisting of baking cupcakes, tagging consignment, and washing dishes may seem a little silly.  But isn't it awesome that God doesn't care how big or how small our problems are?  He wants us to come to him for rest!  Whether we are tired from lots to do and little sleep or tired from facing illness or just tired of the stresses that being a real grown up brings, he tells us to come to him and he will give us rest!  Spend time with him and unload a little.

It is so easy to get caught up and worn down from our daily lives and try to do it all ourselves.  But why don't we give it all to the Lord and let him help lift some of that burden?  He wants to do that for us.

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly." - The Message

What I Read - Wild by Cheryl Strayed

just finished Wild by Cheryl Strayed over the snow break.  I would have to say this has probably been my favorite book I have read so far this year (it's only March though).  I am a little behind on my goal for 50 books for the year due to a few I started but just couldn't make it through so I put those on hold for a while and picked up this one.  I've mentioned before that I really love books that make it to the big screen and this one fits the bill jus
The story is the story of Cheryl Strayed's personal journey through a summer backpacking the Pacific Crest Trail.  The book follows her through some major moments in her life where she found herself torn and broken and needing a fresh start.  So, she pretty much sold most of everything she had and decided to backpack hundreds of miles on her own.  She is so honest as she meets new hikers, wildlife, and some questionable characters along the trail.  She speaks of her physical pain as well as the emotional journey she is on.  This book makes me want to go buy a pair of boots and a tent and do a little trail backpacking myself.

I don't really know how I would categorize this book.  It has some suspense and some humor but it also has some very sad situations as well as some thrilling moments.  It was a really good book and I hope to be able to see the movie soon.  I am sure Reese Witherspoon is perfect for the part of Cheryl.  She is exactly who I pictured in my mind the whole time I was reading it!

Wonderful Weekend for Women

Some of the ladies at my church have been attending a women's conference in Tennesse for the last few years and I was so glad I got to tag along with them this time!

I have been blessed with so many wonderful women, not only in just my immediate family, but also in my church family!

I so love spending time with older strong Christian women who have already been-there-done-that and mastere the walk through life's many journeys. I love to peek into their lives and admire the way they have handled the trials and triumphs that God has given them. I have such a special place in my heart for women's ministry because I believe it is so important as a young wife and mother to have ladies like this to mentor and encourage me not only in my walk with Christ but also as I juggle the real world of babies, house work, and to-do lists!

Even though the ice and snow caused a little kink in our plans, we still had a wonderful weekend shopping and talking and eating and talking and learning and talking and admiring icicles and talking and praising our God! Not to mention the pleasure of an undisturbed full nights rest in a soft bed all by myself  without listening to snoring or wrestling little feet jabbing into my back!

And unfortunately, we somehow managed to miss a group picture but my friend Mollie shared this one pic of us and her lovely mother!

This wonderful weekend for women was such a blessing to me and I can't wait to do it again!

I think I may almost be a real runner.

Yesterday in Alabama was wonderful!  It was over 70 degrees out and really just a lovely day.  I was soooo excited to be able to get out and go for a run outside.  I am really trying to stick to my running plan but I really hate the treadmill so I was so glad to get outside to run.  We have a really great place near my building at work that I just love.  It's so quite and I really enjoy the time to myself!

I have really started to enjoy running.  I don't really know how to explain it but there is just something about it that gets a little bit obsessive and I actually find myself looking forward to my runs.  I am really trying not to set too big of goals for my running though.  I know there are several races coming up in the spring that I would like to participate in but I am afraid I may be over-estimating my abilities.  I just have to remember to pace pace pace and that I am NOT going to finish first (6:30 minute pace for 6+miles ain't happening for this girl for sure).

But as lovely as that run was, today it is 30 degrees with ice outside!  We are seriously off work today because of the "Winter Weather Storm"!!!  How is this even possible?  I thought we were done with the snowsuits and boots last week... guess it's back to the treadmill for a while!
